This Practice Note sets out the background to the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) and to the LMAA Terms under which shipping arbitrations and other ad hoc arbitrations, in which LMAA members have accepted appointment, are conducted. This Practice Note may be referred to as an introduction to the LMAA.

The London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) Terms 2021 (the Terms) are used in shipping arbitrations and other ad hoc arbitrations, in which LMAA members have accepted appointment. This Practice Note sets out how to commence an arbitration under the Terms and the procedure of the arbitration as set out in the Terms. It covers submissions, amendments, seeking further information from an opposing party and the LMAA Questionnaire in order to assist the tribunal with the procedure for the arbitration, and hearings, including virtual hearings.

This Practice Note sets out the costs and related issues, procedures, awards and orders involved in an arbitration under the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) Terms 2021, which are used in shipping arbitrations and other ad hoc arbitrations, in which LMAA members have accepted appointment. It includes the questions on costs in the LMAA Questionnaire, an application for the recovery of costs and the tribunal’s rationale applied in determining costs. It also covers provisions regarding security for costs.
