This Practice Note looks at the Biometric Immigration Document (BID), the document which in most cases confirms a person’s limited or indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK. There are two types of BID, the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and the Short Stay Permit (SSP). The note covers what BIDs are, what biometric information must be provided to obtain them, the process of receipt, how to correct mistakes on a BID and what to do if a BID is lost, stolen or damaged.

The note also details the immigration sanctions and civil penalties that can be issued for non-compliance and the procedure for challenging these.
