James Clanchy
Full-time Independent Arbitrator, Full Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association
James Clanchy is a full-time arbitrator in independent practice. He is an Associate Member of Six Pump Court Chambers in London and a Full Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association.
James has more than 30 years’ experience of ad hoc, trade association, institutional and investment arbitrations, including as a solicitor and avocat in London and Paris, as former Registrar and Deputy Director General of the London Court of International Arbitration, as a case assessor for legal costs insurers and third-party funders, and as arbitrator.
His background is in shipping, commodities, oil and gas, insurance and wider commercial dispute resolution. Since becoming an arbitrator in independent practice in 2016, his appointments have largely been in these sectors. He accepts appointments in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations, both as sole arbitrator and as a member of three-member tribunals.
James spent more than 20 years in private practice, including with Withers, Holman Fenwick Willan and Stephenson Harwood. At the LCIA from 2008 to 2012, he oversaw the administration of more than a thousand commercial arbitrations and assisted with the updating of the institution’s arbitration rules. At Thomas Miller Legal, he assessed and managed a wide range of commercial and investment claims on behalf of insurers and third-party funders.
James is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is also a former Honorary Secretary of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association and co-editor for London arbitration at Lloyd’s Maritime Law Newsletter.
