This Practice Note provides information on landfill sites, including types of waste that can be landfilled and associated environmental risks. It outlines technical guidance on risks, gas protection measures, remediation measures and how to deal with landfill sites in property transactions. It also provides information on relevant legislation including the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 and the Waste (Circular Economy) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 which include a restriction on certain streams of waste being accepted at landfill and targets for landfill waste to be included in waste management plans. This note also links to relevant Brexit content.
