Dr Ben Clubbs Coldron

Throughout his career Dr Benjamin Clubbs Coldron has worked at the intersection of law, emerging technologies, and social policy, bringing together rigorous empirical research with legal analysis to address the challenges posed by rapid technological change.

As an AHRC-DfG funded Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Stirling, he conducted comparative socio-legal research on consumer protection in the Internet of Things across the UK and Germany, collaborating with researchers at the Universities of Warwick, Bonn, and Osnabrück. This work produced the concept of "cyborg vulnerability", published in the Journal of Consumer Policy, which reassesses fundamental principles of consumer law and policy in light of the increasingly intimate relationship between people and connected devices. He has also published on wearable technology and data protection in the fashion industry (Routledge Handbook of Fashion Law), disability rights in consumer law, and human rights based approaches to consumer contracting (Bloomsbury Publishing).

At the University of Strathclyde, he coordinated two large interdisciplinary funding proposals (each over £1 million) to the Wellcome Trust and UKRI addressing the legal and ethical implications of brain-computer interfaces and artificial intelligence. He serves on the coordinating board of SCOTLIN, the Scottish Law and Innovation Network, where he coordinates a public-facing talk series, represents the network at Law Society of Scotland events, and produces a podcast exploring legal and ethical questions around innovation and technology.

Dr Clubbs Coldron holds a PhD in Mental Health Law, Policy, and Practice, an MSc in Research Methods, and an LLB in Law, all from the University of Nottingham.
