
Russell’s practice sits within CMS London’s 4-partner competition law team, providing all aspects of advice on merger control, foreign investment control, anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance, market investigations, public procurement and state aid/subsidy control to a wide range of blue chip and major corporate clients.
He has a strong focus on competition law and regulatory aspects of technology, media & telecoms matters, and in recent years has also developed particular expertise advising on merger control, competition, foreign investment and subsidy control aspects of projects linked to the energy transition including wind, solar and tidal power, as well as CCS. He has worked extensively with clients in the construction, energy, life sciences, real estate, consumer products, financial services, shipping, construction and manufacturing sectors.
Recent publishable highlights have included advising GSK on a high-profile reverse patent settlement investigation and one of the OFT/CMA's longest and most high-profile prohibitive competition law inquiries; CityFibre on its £200m acquisition of the FibreNation business from TalkTalk; NewRiver on the sale of a portfolio of 1,000 pubs to Admiral Taverns; APG in its acquisition of 50% of the European VIA Outlets shopping centre portfolio in 11 European cities and Atos Medical on its acquisition of the medical devices business of TRACOE Medical.
He has gained a particularly valuable perspective by spending time working in-house at major international mobile network operator where he advised on dealings with fixed access providers, mobile network wholesale arrangements and mobile network sharing arrangements.
