I11.542 Certificates of tax deposit

Inheritance tax may be paid by certificates of tax deposit1. The purpose of the deposits is to enable taxpayers to provide for tax payable in the future, the amount of which may be unknown or in dispute, and to provide protection against a charge to interest on tax paid late. However, the scheme closed on 23 November 2017 so that it is no longer possible to purchase new certificates but existing certificates will continue to be honoured until 23 November 2023 (see A4.635). A minimum of £2,000 was required to be deposited and thereafter deposits
