D8.341 Form of investment relief

Investment relief is available as a deduction from corporation tax chargeable on profits (not as a deduction in calculating those profits). The amount of investment relief is 20% of the amount subscribed or such smaller amount that the company is entitled to, and does, claim. The amount of relief is further restricted where it would reduce the liability to nil; accordingly the relief cannot be used to produce a loss1. This restriction also means that there is no provision to carry forward or carry back any unused relief. As to calculating the tax payable, see D1.1201.
