Dredging capital allowances

B3.801 Definition

Dredging includes the removal of anything forming part of, or projecting from, the bed of the sea or any inland water, by whatever means it is removed, even if it is wholly or partly above water. It also includes the widening of an inland waterway. It does not include anything done other than in the interests of shipping1.

'Qualifying trade' means a trade or undertaking all or part of which2:

  1.  

    (a)     consists of the maintenance or improvement of the navigation of a harbour, estuary or waterway, or

  2.  

    (b)     is of a kind listed in CAA 2001, s 274 (which related to industrial buildings allowances before their repeal).

  3.  

    The following trades fall within (b) above3:

    1.  

      (i)     a trade consisting of manufacturing goods or materials

    2.  

      (ii)     a trade consisting of subjecting goods or materials to a process (including maintaining or repairing goods or materials

    3.  

      (iii)     a trade consisting of storing goods or materials:
