B2.467 Research and development

Certain qualifying expenditure incurred on research and development projects can qualify for research and development tax relief. For corporation tax purposes, the relief available depends upon the size of the company. See Division D1.4.

For income tax, a deduction is available to a trader in respect of revenue expenditure on research and development (R&D) which is related to the trade. The work can either be directly undertaken by the trader, or on behalf of the trader1.
