A1.704 Authorised government departments

Civil proceedings by or against the Crown may be instituted either by or against the appropriate authorised government department in its own name or by or against the Attorney-General. If proceedings are instituted against the Attorney-General, he may apply to substitute an authorised government department1.

The Minister for the Civil Service regularly publishes a list specifying the several government departments authorised for the purposes of the Crown Proceedings Act 1947, s 17, with the name and address of the solicitor for each such department2.
