V6.267 Introduction

Housing associations are normally corporate bodies incorporated under the Industrial & Provident Societies Act 1965, with or without charitable status. Those with charitable status tend to meet the housing needs of the elderly, such as sheltered housing, whereas those without charitable status tend to cover the wider social housing sector. Housing associations are regulated by the HCA and have their own accounting standards.

Housing associations are unable to distribute profits to members and as such are non-profit-making bodies applying their surpluses to the maintenance and expansion of their existing housing stock. Nevertheless, they are competitive but
