V22.103 The Sustainability Fund

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) was responsible for the management of the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) which was launched in 2002. It was intended that the Fund should complement the objectives of the aggregates levy (some of the revenues raised by which contribute to the Fund) by minimising the demand for primary aggregates, promoting environmentally friendly extraction and transport, and by reducing the effects of local aggregates extraction1.

The first allocation was £35m. This was distributed to various projects concentrating on reducing the environmental impact of extracting and transporting aggregate. DEFRA
