Why should you buy Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): Law and Practice
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is now widely recognised, both domestically and internationally, as child abuse and a serious human rights violation. However, it remains a practice shrouded in secrecy and one which all too often has escaped the reaches of the child protection system. It is vital in order to prevent FGM that all relevant professionals have a clear understanding of the socio-cultural reasons for the practice, the factors which may indicate a girl or young woman is at real risk of being forced to undergo FGM and of the effective preventative legal steps that should be taken.
This specialist title, written in close consultation with survivors of FGM and frontline practitioners from across the spectrum of disciplines, provides a comprehensive and readily accessible guide to all of these matters. Set within a human rights framework, this book summarises the key legal developments and debates across international law, family law, immigration and criminal law.
Female Genital Mutilation: Law and Practice is an invaluable guide to this complex and sensitive topic for judges, lawyers, social workers, teachers, midwives, and other related professionals.
"written by one of the foremost legal experts in the field: Zimran Samuel of Doughty Street Chambers and a visiting fellow at the LSE. His mission is to offer a single point of reference for all those dealing with this disgusting crime now widely recognised both domestically and internationally as child abuse and a serious human rights violation ... before you do anything else with this book, read the foreword written by Keehan J which sets the scene as the campaign continues to stop the practice. However, as becomes obvious from the book, it remains a practice shrouded in secrecy and one which all too often has escaped the reaches of the child protection system" Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers and Phillip Taylor MBE, Head of Chambers and Reviews Editor, The Barrister.
"he usefulness of this publication is that all the information required in FGM cases is comprehensively, although in some areas briefly and in outline only, set out in 11 chapters within 181 pages ... The book will be useful as a practical guide to those unfamiliar with FGM and the law and procedure on the subject; for training purposes; better understanding and awareness of the incidence of FGM and as a ready at hand information directory for the available statistics, support services and appropriate contacts where guidance may be obtained. It brings together all the necessary information in one place and is therefore a welcome publication" Her Honour Nasreen Pearce, Retired Circuit Judge
" extremely useful comprehensive and readily accessible book sets out the key legal developments of recent years. It will provide invaluable and much needed guidance to all professionals who encounter the issue ... Samuel’s book will be a very useful book for all those involved in legal proceedings where FGM is in issue and social workers, teachers, midwives and other professionals. It provides a very helpful and detailed section on resources and useful contacts including in the court system and medical centres and practitioners who are experts in the field and organisations who have the experience of working with young girls" Amelia Nice, 5 St Andrew’s Hill Chambers
