Latest LexisNexis report, Mind the gap, reveals major disconnect between lawyers and decision makers
Lawyers and decision makers in mid-law are not agreeing on the firm’s priorities, says LexisNexis report
LONDON, 22nd March 2016 – LexisNexis UK (www.lexisnexis.co.uk), a leading provider of content and technology solutions, today announced that specially commissioned LexisNexis report, Mind the gap, reveals that there is a disconnect between decision makers and lawyers in mid-size firms over what their firm’s top priorities are. 84% of decision makers believe that the firm has a clear strategy for the future direction of the business, while only 62% of lawyers consider this to be true.
The report reveals that decision makers rank review of information sources as their main focus in 2016, whereas lawyers believe the top priority should be investment in processes and technology. Further differences centered on employment issues with the biggest gap surrounding the quality of training. 68% of decision makers agree that the firm prides itself on the quality of staff training compared to only 34% of lawyers.
Despite this, the report found decision makers and lawyers are agreed on what makes a great law firm. Above average service tops the list, followed closely by transparent fees. Other areas that stand out are having a clear business development strategy, investing in staff training and access to the best legal information.
Dr Marc K Peter, Director of Sales and Marketing at LexisNexis UK, commented: “There’s been a great deal of speculation about how the legal landscape will change over the next five to ten years, and many predict that mid-size law firms will face the greatest threat. So it’s essential for decision makers to be able to take a step back and take an honest, unvarnished view of their firm.”
The Mind the gap report is based on interviews and surveys with 56 decision makers and more than 100 practising lawyers in mid-sized law firms across England, at the end of 2015. It explores the general health, prospects for growth and challenges from clients and staff, to give a broader picture of the dynamics – and tensions – within mid-size law firms.
