Natural England and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have announced the creation of a new National Nature Reserve spanning the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge. This move is aimed at restoring and conserving 1,413 hectares of land comprising grasslands, wooded combes and rocky outcrops, bringing together 31 nature reserves and over 400 hectares of new land in an effort to create more space and greater access for locals and to halt the decline in wildlife populations in accordance with targets set out in the Environment Act 2021.
