Pensions analysis: On 11 February 2019, the government published its response to its consultation paper on ‘Protecting defined benefit pension schemes—a stronger Pensions Regulator,’ which set out proposals to improve the powers of the Pensions Regulator (TPR) so that it can be more pro-active, obtain the right information and get redress for members if things go wrong. This included proposals to extend the Pensions Regulator’s powers to impose fines, create new criminal sanctions, extend the notifiable events regime, clarify expectations around clearance and improve the contribution notice and financial support direction regimes. The government has now confirmed that it intends to proceed with the majority of the proposed measures.
