This series of Practice Notes has been developed with the aim of helping lawyers who are new to working in-house, to develop their influencing skills and embed this thinking into their working day, using short sharp focussed key messages broken down into practical and easy to digest content.
In this first Practice Note we will explore the meaning of the term influencing. We will include links to video content from senior General Counsels (GCs) and presentation skills specialists operating at the sharp end of the business world.
What do we mean by influencing? It is a very broad topic, but here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
making sure that the right decisions get made—and avoiding the trap of bad ones
being the consigliere—the trusted adviser circling around the organisation, operational risk firmly in view, making sure that everyone stays on track
a way of harnessing the power that other people have in the organisation—for the benefit of the organisation
moving towards a form of 'soft power'—from carrot and stic
