Regulation (EU) 2019/78724 May 2019: In forceRegulation (EU) 2019/787 deals with the definition, description, presentation and labelling of spirit drinks, the use of the names of spirit drinks in the presentation and labelling of other foodstuffs, the protection of GIs for spirit drinks, the use of ethyl alcohol and distillates of agricultural origin in alcoholic beverages. It repeals Regulation (EC) 110/2008.

The purpose of the regulation is to implement minor technical adjustments and to replace the existing procedures for the management of GIs in the spirit drinks sector, so as to align them with those set out in Regulation (EU) 1151/2012 (which governs agricultural products and foodstuffs). In particular, the new regulation strengthens the protection given to GIs compared with trade marks by providing for a disuse period of seven consecutive years, meaning that a GI remains protected up to seven
