Tier 1 (Investor): eligibility requirements for initial applications

Introduction

The UK government actively encourages investment in the UK and has created a visa category specifically for major investors and their families: the Tier 1 (Investor) category.

This route is designed for high-net-worth individuals who would like to relocate to and make substantial financial investments into UK economy. It is a particularly attractive route for non-EEA nationals who have sufficient liquid funds as it provides them with:

  1. high degree of flexibility in terms of employment—the restrictions on self-employment and employment in the UK are very limited

  2. an accelerated route to indefinite leave after two years for those who invest at least £10m, or after three years for those who invest at least £5m, and

  3. the opportunity to bring their spouse and children who are under the age of 18 to the UK although the dependant partners and children may not be able to take advantage of the accelerated routes to indefinite leave to remain

The sub-tier replaced the pre-Points-Based System Investor category on 28 June 2008 and has been subject to a number of revisions since then. The most significant two sets of changes were made in November 2014 and March 2019. For more information, see: Tier 1 (Investor)—overview.
