Nuclear power has been produced commercially in the UK since the 1950s and grew out of the policy need for a nuclear deterrent. The UK currently has 15 reactors generating about 21% of its electricity supply. Following the execution by the Government of the contract with EDF to build the UK’s first nuclear power plant for a generation at the ‘Hinkley Point C’ site in West Somerset (see LNB News 29/09/2016 126), nuclear power is set to play a bigger role in the UK’s energy policy going forwards.
