Membership of the European Union has steadily grown since its founding members formed the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952, followed by the establishment of the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community in 1958.
The following is a list of the 28 EU Member States, their official language/s and the date they each joined.
Brexit: The UK's departure from the EU on exit day, ie Friday 31 January 2020, results in it no longer being an EU Member State. However, under the Withdrawal Agreement it will still be regarded as an EU Member State during the implementation period, see News Analysis: Brexit—impact of exit day for dispute resolution.
