Formulating an ICT plan

This Practice Note provides information on formulating, drafting and implementing a strategic (information and communication technology) ICT plan.

What is ICT?

Information and communication technology is a generic term that can cover communication devices such as computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and mobile phones as well as the numerous services and applications associated with them. Many, however, see the importance of ICT not in the technology itself but in its potential to create greater access to information and communication. ICT may particularly assist with:

  1. improving productivity and, in particular, helping individuals to do their job better

  2. improving accessibility

  3. assisting with information sharing, and

  4. aiding communication

Having in place a well-structured and accessible ICT structure could help enable a firm or organisation to:

  1. improve the delivery of its client services

  2. ensure it is managed effectively and efficiently

  3. ensure its services and workplace are made more accessible

The key tasks to undertake in order to effectively consider ICT include:

  1. identifying key members of staff to obtain their input

  2. identifying your ICT strategy, ie what you want to achieve

  3. formulating your ICT plan and justifying what the firm needs and why

  4. implementing your ICT plan, and

  5. reviewing your ICT plan

This is illustrated in the flowchart below, which shows how to formulate and review an ICT plan based on our ICT plan precedent.
