See Practice Note: Environmental consultants—when and how to use environmental consultants.

Choosing an environmental consultant

There are over 400 environmental consultancies across the UK, varying from large to small and with a spectrum of expertise. Prior to instructing a consultancy the client should consider the:

  1. scope of the work

  2. expertise of the professionals

  3. size of the consultancy

  4. budget

  5. timeframe

In some cases, it may be appropriate to appoint a single consultant. For larger projects with tight timeframes, it may be necessary to employ a multidisciplinary practice which has a series of specialists to work on the project. However, larger consultancies tend to be more costly.

You can find environmental consultants by searching directories, including the:

  1. ENDS Directory

  2. Edie.net

Specialist directories include the:

  1. Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) for water and environmental management specialists

  2. Energy Institute for energy consultants

  3. Association of noise consultants
