Introduction

The UK has been one of the favoured locations for global businesses to set up their first base in Europe. The UK has maintained strong trade links with most countries in the world—it is geographically located in Europe, but also serves as a mid-point between the US and Asian time zones. The World Bank report Doing Business 2020 ranks the UK the second easiest place to set up and run a business in Europe (after Denmark), and the eighth easiest jurisdiction globally. This is largely due to its highly-developed but modern system of laws, stable political climate and practical approach to business regulation.

It is unknown how this ranking may be affected following the end of the Brexit implementation period (11th UK time on 31 December 2020), but to date Brexit has had little impact on the ranking. The UK and the EU reached an agreement on the terms of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement on 31 December 2020 which provides a free trade mechanism for goods, and mechanisms for mutual cooperation in various policy areas. However, it does not address many key concerns relating to the provision of services
