The requirement to undertake 16 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) training each year was phased out in November 2016 and replaced by the SRA competency regime. The competency regime requires solicitors to reflect on the quality of their practice, identify any learning and development needs and then address these needs to make sure their knowledge and skills are up to date and they are competent to practice. This Practice Note sets out a framework of the continuing competencies in-house solicitors should meet based upon the requirements of the SRA Statement of solicitor competence.

This competency framework shows the behaviours required for the different in-house roles. It is designed to help you to ensure you are meeting your SRA requirements and also to facilitate your personal development by highlighting the competencies you need to have in order to progress to the next level in your career. Where relevant, hyperlinks are included to additional guidance or tools on particular behaviours.

It is worth noting that all behaviours in the competency framework are cumulative, which means that someone in a level 4 role would also be expected to display all the behaviours included in level 1, 2 and 3
