This Practice Note contains a case study following the implementation of a competency framework within a large legal team. There may appear to be a lot of stages but this is something that needs to be well thought through and clearly aligned and embedded within the culture of the organisation.
A member of the HR team spoke with a couple of senior lawyers about the idea of introducing a competency framework—they agreed to the idea and it was raised at the monthly senior managers meeting. The rest of the managers agreed in principle but asked for a business case to be presented at the next meeting.
The two senior lawyers worked with the HR team to develop a business case for the framework that was clearly aligned with the business goals and objectives. Their presentation included:
what is a competency framework?
why do we need one here?
other organisations that have used competency frameworks successfully
links to the SRA requirements
the requirements of the business plan
what we hope it will achieve
how we would implement it and use it
They met with some challenges. The meeting allowed time for discussion about what the framework should include and what it could, and could not, be expected to achieve.
