ARCHIVED: This archived Practice Note looks at the Pensions Regulator’s quarterly auto-enrolment compliance and enforcement bulletins up to June 2020. It provides a short summary of each quarterly bulletin over that period, the enforcement action taken and the key messages for employers in relation to auto-enrolment. It is not maintained and is for historical information only. The Pensions Regulator issues quarterly compliance and enforcement bulletins on auto-enrolment in order to:

  1. provide information about its cases and the powers it has used under the auto-enrolment regime, and

  2. help employers, their advisers and the pensions industry as a whole understand the type of compliance and enforcement interventions that follows its educational and enabling communications and support

The first quarterly bulletin was published in July 2014 and covered the period from 1 April 2014 to 30 June 2014.

The Pensions Regulator has already amply demonstrated its willingness to exercise its enforcement powers in relation to auto-enrolment. The latest quarterly bulletins confirm that there continues to be significant enforcement activity by the Pensions Regulator now that small and micro employers have reached their staging dates (although compliance rates remain very high and the Pensions Regulator has only had to use its powers
