GLOSSARY

Expression of wish definition

What does Expression of wish mean?

Notification by a member to their pension scheme of how they wish their lump sum death benefits to be paid.

This enables a member to indicate to trustees a preference as to who should receive any lump sum death benefit paid under discretionary trust. However, trustees are not bound to follow the member’s wishes. This non-binding mechanism is adopted to avoid liability for inheritance tax.
