What is an open standard and who are the main bodies responsible for publishing open standards relevant to the internet of things? What is an open standard? The term ‘open standard’, in the context of software development, defines a publicly available standard that is developed (or approved) and maintained via a collaborative process with a view to the facilitation of interoperability and free data exchange. In this context a ‘standard’ is typically a specification, methodology practice or procedure which relates in some way to a technical system. Making the standard ‘open’ opens the process for creating and maintaining the standard, providing access to the resultant specification and dealing with the ownership rights. The principle behind the open standard is that contributors bring expertise and innovation to a level playing field and collaborate to develop technology which is then available to all. The Digital Standards Organisation comments that 'the economic outcome of a free and open standard, which can be measured, is that it enables perfect competition between suppliers of products based on the standard.' Such open standards are key to facilitating interoperability. The UK government developed their own set of Open Data Principles to promote their support for implementing and adopting open standards across central government and all public bodies in the UK. Environment weekly highlights—12 May 2022

This week's edition of Environment weekly highlights includes analysis of the key environmental announcements made during the Queen’s Speech 2022, as well as analysis on the case of Alame v Royal Dutch Shell plc which considered what individual claimants should be required to provide in relation to the environmental incidents and harm arising in global claims, increasing magistrates’ powers to impose custodial sentences for either way offences, ESG ratings agencies being brought within the Financial Conduct Authority's regulatory perimeter, the Subsidy Control Act 2022, the embedding of green goals within the UK government’s economic and financial decision-making, the Commission’s proposals to improve consumer and environmental protection through stricter regulations on ‘greenwashing’ and new finance, financial services and capital markets climate clauses published by the Chancery Lane Project (TCLP). In addition, this week the government launched a new Green Jobs Delivery Group, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs called for views on a proposal to continue operating the existing Producer Compliance Scheme Balancing System, the Environment Agency responded to the nature recovery green paper consultation and the consultation on environmental targets, and TCLP published new built environment climate clauses.

This week's edition of EU Law weekly highlights includes the European Parliament adopting a resolution that welcomes the detailed proposals from the Conference on the Future of Europe and sets the Parliament’s follow-up to the recommendations, the CJEU broadening the scope of the Zambrano caselaw, the European Parliament and Council reaching a provisional agreement on ‘daisy chain’ amendments to CRR and BRRD, the European Commission introducing an initiative for a new Cyber Resilience Act that is set to establish new cybersecurity rules for digital products and ancillary services and the ACER and CEER publishing a paper on the proposed revision of gas storage and security of supply regulation. The highlights further include the CJEU imposing EU consumer law obligation on third party suppliers, and the European Commission adopting measures relating to vertical block exemptions and vertical agreements in distribution.
