What does Assured Shorthold Tenancy mean?

A type of assured tenancy under the Housing Act 1988 of a residential property. It provides little long-term security, as a landlord may recover possession at the end of the contractual term, upon service of a notice and possession proceedings, but without needing to establish any grounds for possession.
