In 2007, as part of the package of measures contained in the Treaty of Lisbon, the EU adopted a Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (see PII [53] ff for the text of the relevant articles). Article 31(2) provides that 'Every worker has the right to limitation of maximum working hours, to daily and weekly rest periods and to an annual period of paid leave.'
