B.     Duties of the employer

(1)     To pay wages

The employer's principal duty at common law is to pay the wages or salary agreed between the parties as part of the contract of employment. The duty is conditional upon the employee's earning his wage or salary by providing appropriate consideration in the form of his work for the employer. Sometimes the consideration provided by the employee is taken to be his service (mere readiness and willingness to perform work). The common law duty to pay wages is, however, hedged about and supplemented by various statutory requirements.
