In general, any material alteration in an instrument after it is complete renders a new stamp necessary, as the effect is to make it in substance a new instrument1, with the result that the new instrument cannot be proved for want of a stamp, and the old instrument cannot be sued upon as it has been superseded2.
Where an instrument is still incomplete, an alteration may be made without rendering a new stamp necessary
