176. Powers of magistrates' courts to issue fines on summary conviction.

An enactment may provide that an offence is punishable on summary conviction by a fine or maximum fine not exceeding a specified level on the 'standard scale'1. There are five levels on the standard scale, the highest being £5,0002. An enactment may also provide that a fine or penalty on summary conviction for an offence triable either way may not exceed the 'statutory maximum' of £5,0003. However:
