If a court1 passes a life sentence2 in circumstances where the sentence is not fixed by law3, the court must, unless it orders4 otherwise, order that the early release provisions5 apply to the offender as soon as he has served the part of the sentence which is specified in the order6. The part of the sentence must be such as the court considers appropriate, taking into account specified matters7.
