A 'pre-sentence report' is a report which, with a view to assisting the court in determining the most suitable method of dealing with an offender, is made or submitted by an appropriate officer1 and contains information as to such matters, presented in such manner, as may be prescribed by rules made by the Secretary of State2. Subject to any such rules the court may accept a pre-sentence report given orally in open court
