449. Right to respect for private and family life.

The right to respect for private and family life1 has been invoked in conjunction with the freedom of thought, conscience and religion2 in cases concerning medical treatment, and most domestic legal systems recognise and respect the absolute right of an adult who suffers from no mental incapacity to make decisions concerning their treatment on grounds of conscience or belief, including the right to choose not to receive treatment, even when this may involve a risk to life
