The EU Charter provides that the family enjoys legal, economic and social protection1 and that to reconcile family and professional life, everyone has the right to protection from dismissal for a reason connected with maternity2 and the right to paid maternity leave and to parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child3.
Although work-life balance and parental leave are not specifically addressed by the European Convention on Human Rights4 there is an obvious correspondence between the Charter protections and the right to respect for family and private life under the Convention
