The right to life1 may be engaged in cases of serious injury where death has not resulted2. Domestic courts have held that the obligation to hold an investigation under the procedural duty imposed by Article 2 is triggered by an attempted suicide which results in long-term injury3. The requirements of Article 2 have also been held to apply in circumstances where the victim survives an attack which, because of the lethal force used, by its very nature, put his or her life at risk
