If the holder of a peerage succeeds to the Crown, the dignity merges in the Crown and can only be revived or recreated by a new grant1.
A previous title does not merge in a new grant. Thus, a barony by writ does not merge in a new grant by letters patent2, and a lesser title does not merge in a greater one subsequently united in the same person by grant or otherwise, since, even if the greater title becomes extinct through failure of inheritable blood under the particular limitations of the grant, the lesser may continue as originally limited
