871. Grant of arms and procedure to obtain royal licence for change of surname and bearing of arms.

The granting of arms is part of the prerogative of the Sovereign1, which is delegated, by letters patent under the Great Seal, to the Kings of Arms2, to exercise in accordance with the law of arms3.

In order to obtain a royal licence authorising a change of surname and the bearing of the arms of another family4, an application must be made to the College of Arms5 for a petition in proper form, stating the reasons for the application and other necessary matters, to be drawn up by one of the officers of arms
