Any person who succeeds to a hereditary peerage of England, Scotland, Great Britain or the United Kingdom1 on or after 31 July 19632 may, by an instrument of disclaimer delivered to the Lord Chancellor, disclaim that peerage for his life3. Any such instrument of disclaimer must be delivered within the period of 12 months beginning with the day on which the person succeeds to that peerage
