596. The Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State1 appoints the comptroller2 and may authorise anyone to act for the comptroller3. The Secretary of State may appoint and remove examiners and other officers and clerks for the UK Intellectual Property Office4, and is required to report on the Office's activities and related matters5.

The Secretary of State has particular functions relating to applications for patents where defence or public safety is involved6 and in connection with Crown use of patents7.
