511. Protection of wild birds and animals generally.

Part 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 contains several offences designed to protect wild animals listed under the Act1. There are several exceptions to such offences2 including where a licence has been granted for:

  1.  

    (1)     scientific or educational purposes;

  2.  

    (2)     ringing or marking, or examining any ring or mark on, wild animals;

  3.  

    (3)     conserving wild animals or introducing them to particular areas;

  4.  

    (4)     protecting any zoological or botanical collection;

  5.  

    (5)     photography;

  6.  

    (6)     preserving public health or public safety;

  7.  

    (7)     preventing the spread of disease; and

  8.  

    (8)     preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit,
