498. Proceedings and penalties.

Proceedings for summary offences under Part I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 19811 may be brought within six months from the date on which evidence sufficient in the prosecutor's opinion to warrant the proceedings came to his knowledge2; but no such proceedings may be brought more than two years after the commission of the offence3.

A local authority4 may institute proceedings for any offence under Part I or any order made under it which is committed within its area5.

A person who is guilty of an offence under Part I is liable to a penalty
