An authority1 must give notice2 to Natural England, in relation to England, or the Natural Resources Body for Wales, in relation to Wales3, before carrying out, in the exercise of its functions, operations likely to damage any of the flora, fauna or geological or physiographical features by reason of which a site of special scientific interest is of special interest4. This applies even if the operations would not take place on land5 included in a site of special scientific interest6. In response to such a notice, Natural England or the Natural Resources Body for Wales may send a notice
