The Register of Historic Battlefields was established by the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England ('the Commission')1 to encourage local authorities, owners and others to understand the importance of these sites. Designation on the register introduces no additional statutory controls, but its purpose is to offer protection through the planning system. Another aim is to promote a better understanding of the significance of such battlefields and public enjoyment of them2.
