The Sports Council, the Sports Council for Wales (Cyngor Chwaraeon Cymru) and the Scottish Sports Council were established by royal charter in 1972 with the objects of fostering the knowledge and practice of sport and physical recreation among the public at large1. The Sports Council was replaced in 1996 by two new bodies corporate established by royal charter, the United Kingdom Sports Council and the English Sports Council, and in February 1997 consequential amendments were made to the charter of incorporation of the Sports Council for Wales2.
