On 9 August 1946, the Arts Council of Great Britain was incorporated by royal charter1. That council was responsible for appointing committees, called the Creative Scotland and the Welsh Arts Council, to exercise, or advise the council on the exercise of, its functions in Scotland and Wales2. In 1994 all three bodies were replaced with three new bodies corporate, an independent Arts Council of England3, the Scottish Arts Council4 and an independent Arts Council of Wales5.
